How to Use Shave Oil for Super Silky, Hairless Skin

Though I love to have silky-smooth skin, getting there isn’t always easy. As you might know, there are tons of hair removal options out there: waxing, tweezing, sugaring, and, of course, shaving. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be focusing on the latter. Shaving, especially on the legs and underarms, anecdotally tends to be the most common hair removal method. Perhaps this is also why there are questions about how to get a better shave. One of the best tricks out there? Learning how to use a shave oil for a refined shaving experience.

We’ll get more into detail about what shave oil is (also called pre-shave oil), but it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. This liquid helps reduce friction, avoid injuries or irritation, and leads to a smoother, closer shave. As with all things beauty, there are plenty of shave oils on the market. And that’s why The Daley Dose is using this post to show readers how to use shaving oil properly. We’ll also talk about what shave oil is, what it does, and some of our favorite products currently on the market.

So get to reading—smooth skin is at your fingertips!

How to Use Shave Oil

Before getting to the actual process of using shaving oil, we’ll need to explain what a shave oil is and what it does. This can help you, as readers, to better appreciate and understand whether or not this product is for you.

What Is Shave Oil?

Shave oils are a hybrid between your favorite hair oil and your go-to shaving cream. As their name indicates, these products have a liquid state. Even if you may not have heard of them, these products have been around for some time.

In fact, some of the most popular brands in beauty carry shave oils. The internet’s favorites include:

What Does Shave Oil Do?

Makes for a smoother shave

Because shave oil is, well, oily, it helps soften your skin and hair to offer a smoother glide when you’re shaving. This, in turn, reduces the risk of nicks, cuts, irritation, and razor burn.

Moisturizes skin

Many people use oil in the colder months because it helps keep their skin moisturized. Shaving oil is no different. If you have dry skin, using a shave oil is especially beneficial as it will help prevent some of that dryness.

Contains natural ingredients

Most of today’s shave oils are formulated with skin-loving ingredients, like shea butter and seed oil. Since they don’t usually contain harmful chemicals, shave oils are great for folks with sensitive skin.

How Do You Use Shave Oil?

How to Use Shave Oil

Step 1: Wet your skin with warm water.

Before applying saving oil on any part of your body, you should ensure that the area is damp. Even though water and oil don’t mix, having a slightly wet area helps the oil absorb better. The easiest and most no-fuss way to do this is in the shower. But if you don’t have that kind of time, using a damp shower cloth will do.

Step 2: Apply a few drops of shaving oil on your hands.

Since 2022, I’ve been telling my best friend: “You can always do more, but you can never do less.” That holds true for applying shaving oil. It’s best to start with one to two drops to get a feel for the liquid and build up from there. The area you’re shaving shouldn’t be super oily; it should just have a thin, glistening layer of oil.

Step 3: Shave.

Again, it’s best to do this step in the shower for several reasons. First: It doesn’t require extra clean up. Plus, you’ll want to run your razor under running water frequently to get excess hair out of it. Lastly, the water from the shower can soften your hair and make it easier to shave. If you don’t go this route, we won’t be mad. We just urge you to still rinse your razor for a smoother glide (and more even shave).

Step 4: Rinse your skin with cool water.

Rinsing your skin with cool water serves two purposes when following shaving. It, of course, cleanses your skin of the products that you just used. But it also soothes the skin, closes pores, and preps the area for aftershave.

Step 5: Put on lotion or aftershave balm.

Your post-shave routine is as important as the shaving itself. After thoroughly rinsing your skin with cold water, we recommend using a lotion to keep your skin moisturized. Since you’ve caused slight trauma to your skin, a soothing lotion like Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion would be best.

As we mentioned in the beginning: Shaving is just one way to remove hair from the body. One of the most efficient (and, yes, painful) hair removal methods is the Brazilian wax. However, there are also a lot of questions about it. Namely: How long does a Brazilian wax take? Select the link to learn everything there is to know about Brazilian waxes. And don’t forget your shaving aftercare!
