Typology Reviews: What To Know About This Chic, French Brand

Calling all wannabe chic French girlies—these Typology reviews are for you! When it comes to minimal, pretty, and natural-looking makeup, the French gals know where it’s at. That’s why I was pumped to try this French skincare and makeup brand.

One of the things I love about using beauty products from Europe is that they are guaranteed to be pretty safe for your skin. Comparatively, regulations for beauty products in Europe are much more strict than in the United States. That’s the case with Typology products. This brand is made in France and shipped all over the globe.

My Typology Reviews

Typology is based in Paris, France, and was founded by Ning Li. Li is originally from China and began Typology in 2019. He also co-founded the furniture brand called Made.com.

Me with all the Typology products listed below, along with some amazing picks from my Subtl Beauty Stak

What makes Typology unique is how pared-down the formulations are. This brand is all about simplicity, transparency, and sustainability, and I love that it has a French-girl edge, too. The packaging is made with flat glass bottles, which feels incredibly chic and high-end. Some of the brand’s products are housed in aluminium tubes, and Typology uses FSC-certified paper to help minimize illegal deforestation.

What Are The Best Typology Products?: The Picks I Loved, and The Ones I Didn’t

Typology Tinted Serum with Vitamin C, Squalane & Aloe Vera

Available at Typology ($45)

These Typology reviews would be nothing without covering the Typology Tinted Serum. I’ve been seeing this serum a lot on TikTok, and I agree with many of the insights that other creators have been saying about this formula. It’s liquidy and lightweight, and feels insanely weightless on the skin. It still gives my skin a nice glow without looking too greasy, and I like that it’s not a matte finish, either.

I typically use a brush to blend this onto my skin, but you can easily use your fingers as well. I love that this formula is really easy to apply. According to Typology, all of their products are “skincare” products. Even the picks that most would consider makeup products, like this one. The ingredients list in this serum includes vitamin C, squalane, and aloe vera.

One thing I should note about this product is the shade match. I originally asked the brand to send me the shade Type 2/Light because I typically fall more in the “Light” foundation shade range, rather than the “Fair” range. However, when I applied the “Light” shade on my skin, it was slightly too dark. I can see myself using “Light” in the summer, but I think it’s too dark for the winter months. The brand sent me the shade “Fair,” and I have found that it matches my skin tone better. So this is something to consider before purchasing!

Lastly, according to the Sofie Pavitt Ingredient Checker, this formula includes polyglyceryl-3 diisostearate, which is a pore-clogging ingredient. I haven’t really noticed that this serum clogs my pores, but I will continue to test it and update you here if anything changes. I think it’s just something for those with a super acne-prone skin type to be aware of.

Typology Tinted Concealer

Available at Typology ($35)

This is a thick, full-coverage concealer that pairs really well with the Typology Tinted Serum. Because the Tinted Serum has pretty light coverage, the concealer works wonders to cover any blemishes, redness, discoloration, or undereye bags that the serum might have missed.

Because the formula is so thick, a little goes a long way. I can see this lasting a long-ass time in your makeup kit.

Typology L37 – Eyebrow & Eyelash Serum with 2% Pea Peptides + Castor Oil

Available at Typology ($38)

I’ve been testing this serum for a few months now, and I’m convinced that this is what has been making my lashes look a lot fuller and longer recently. I wasn’t really convinced that this would do much, because it doesn’t have prostaglandins in it (which is an ingredient that I don’t think is super safe for your eyes).

My lashes definitely feel longer after testing this product daily. I like to apply it at night after I do my whole skincare routine. The formula contains castor oil, which is said to help keep your lashes and brows strong and healthy. However, I don’t think it will actually promote the growth of your lashes or brows. It just might make them last longer in the telogen (the final) phase of the lash and brow growth cycle.

I think this has worked on my lashes, and I will continue to use it until I run out. I’ve also been applying it to my brows at night, but I haven’t noticed a huge difference there.

Typology C10 – Lipid-Enriched Cleansing Bar 1% Calendula Extract + Sweet Almond Oil

Available at Typology ($20)

This is a lovely, non-irritating bar of soap. I use it in the shower and cleanse my whole body with it, and I love that it doesn’t have any added fragrance to it. It’s gentle enough to use on your face, but I’d prefer to use my regular facial cleanser rather than a body bar soap.

I think this is a great pick for those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin, and I love that it doesn’t make my skin feel dry after cleansing, either. It’s def on the pricier side for a bar soap, but I think if you want to splurge on a really gentle soap for the shower, this might be worth it. I don’t really think you’ll find something like this for $5 at the drugstore.

Typology D41 – 9-Ingredient Face Moisturizer

Available at Typology ($39)

The positive about this moisturizer is that it only has nine ingredients, which is pretty impressive for an effective moisturizer. The negative is that the second ingredient in this lotion is coconut oil, which is pretty comedogenic for acne-prone skin. Because of that, I don’t like to use this pick on my face. I don’t think it bodes well with my highly sensitive, acne-prone skin. I prefer to use this pick as a hand cream, honestly.

If you’re someone who doesn’t have acne-prone skin, I think you will be fine using this moisturizer. It’s nice, light, and hydrates pretty well, too.

Typology L13 – Exfoliating Cleansing Gel with 5% PHA + Aloe Vera

Available at Typology ($35)

I like to use this cleanser a few times a week, but I don’t like to use it every day. I think it’s better for those with oily skin, but I do like to use it on the areas where I break out often (chin and nose) every so often. For an “exfoliating” cleanser, I do think this pick is pretty gentle. I like that it contains aloe vera, which helps soothe and hydrate the skin.

Typology Picks I Think You Can Pass On

Typology RT41 – Replenishing Lip Balm Ceramides + Hyaluronic acid

Available at Typology ($40)

I have this pick in shade “Rosewood Pink.” I don’t recommend purchasing this for $40. I don’t think it’s worth that much. The color is a bit too subtle for my liking, but the hydration it offers is pretty nice. I wish that I had gotten the shade “Plum Purple” because I think it would show up on my lips more.

The product description says that you can use it on your lips and cheeks. But this barely shows up on my lips, so I can’t imagine it would show up much on my cheeks, either. The packaging is nice, and I love that the formula contains both ceramides and hyaluronic acid, but I don’t think it’s worth $40.

Typology A31 – Hydrating Serum with 3% Hyaluronic Acid + 2% B5

Available at Typology ($49)

I’m meh about this one. Its main ingredient is hyaluronic acid, which isn’t my favorite skin-hydrator of them all (I love ceramides and lipids more). My skin didn’t feel much more hydrated after testing this pick, so I would probably skip it.

Typology Tinted Lip Oil

Available at Typology ($30)

This is a lovely little formula, but I don’t think it’s worth adding to your makeup bag. It’s pretty pricey for what it is, and the formula doesn’t last super long on your lips.

It’s definitely hydrating and adds a nice little bit of color to my lips, but it’s probably not something I would spend $30 on.

Is Typology A Good Brand?

Yes, I think Typology is a good brand and I really like some of their products! I think the packaging is really chic, and some of the formulas are definitely purchase-worthy. There are still a bunch of products from Typology I haven’t tried (like the vitamin C serums and some products with hyaluronic acid). So as I try more, I will update this blog post accordingly.

Where To Buy Typology Products

Interestingly, there is only one place you can purchase Typology products right now and that is on their website! I hope you enjoyed these Typology reviews! Please comment below if you’ve tried any of these (or other products from the brand) and have thoughts.
