Amika Reviews: More Than Just Pretty Packaging

These Amika reviews might make you consider investing in this high-end haircare brand. So, there are a lot of things I don’t necessarily love about my appearance, but my hair is not one of them. I have relatively fine strands but have a lot of hair, and often get complimented on my locks, in and out of the salon.

Choosing the right products for my strands can make or break my look. I’ve tried many, many different haircare brands over the last 20 years. And surprisingly, I only really started using Amika recently.

The brand sent me a bunch of products to test out for editorial consideration for the many journalism outlets I write for. Because Amika products aren’t necessarily cheap, I’ve never splurged on any of them to try out.

Below, I will be sharing my honest thoughts about this brand and its formulas. Even though I was gifted these products, I am under no obligation to write about them. Since I really loved a bunch of them, I thought I’d add a blog post about them to my site!

My hair after using the Amika Big Hit Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner, the Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask, The Wizard Detangling Primer, and the Rising Star Volumizing Finishing Spray.

My Honest Amika Reviews

First off, I mean the packaging on this brand is next-level. I am obsessed with 60s and 70s patterns, and Amika definitely delivers on that front. The products are so fun, bold, and bright, and look so beautiful in my shower.

I think all the product names are really fun. And they’ve done a good job in terms of explaining the products while also making the branding cute and clever. I like that the brand caters to all hair types, and was founded in Brooklyn.

7 Best Amika Products

Amika Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask

Available at Sephora ($34)

I have been so wow-ed by this hair mask. It does such an amazing job of keeping my long, thick hair tangle-free. It adds an impressive amount of softness and shine to my hair, too. Plus, it smells great. I like to use this in place of a conditioner after I’ve shampooed. I let it sit on my hair for 5-10 minutes while I finish up the rest of my shower routine.

This is a thick, buttery formula that’s pretty easy to distribute through your locks. I hate that it comes in a tub and I have to unscrew it to get the mask out. Additionally, I think that this would be a terrible product for anyone who has really thin hair. I think it would be too heavy for thin hair and cause oiliness and greasiness too fast. Otherwise, I love it for my thick, color-treated, dry hair.

Amika Blowout Babe Thermal Ionic Hairbrush

Available at Sephora ($100)

I’ve been really impressed with this thermal round brush ever since I got it. It’s probably one of my favorite Amika products. I think the invention of the thermal round brush is genius. And I know these have been blowing up all over TikTok. This product definitely makes my hair look like I blew it out nicely every time.

I’m torn about whether I think this round brush takes more, less, or the same amount of time as blowing your hair out takes. I usually have to do two passes over my hair to actually get my hair smooth. But I guess that’s the same case when I’m blowing out my hair from wet to dry as well.

I have pretty long hair. Using this takes more time than it would for someone with short or medium-length hair. I definitely think the price is fair, and if you like to air dry your hair but want to style it once it’s dry, I think this is a great tool to have.

Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer

Available at Sephora ($31)

I don’t typically use heat on my hair a ton, so I don’t use a heat-protecting product very often, either. This does a good job of protecting my hair from heat damage while also detangling my long locks, too. I love that it is silicone-free and won’t really weigh down my hair at all. It leaves my hair feeling and looking a bit shinier and smoother after I blow dry with this primer. I think it’s a great option for anyone who uses hot tools on their hair often and needs a great heat protectant that also acts as a detangler, too.

Amika Perk Up Plus Extended Clean Dry Shampoo

Available at Sephora ($30)

I didn’t really understand the difference between the Amika Perk Up Plus Extended Clean Dry Shampoo and the Perk Up Ultra Oil Control Dry Shampoo at first. I also don’t think I noticed a huge difference between the two, either. Maybe as I continue to use these products, I will use one dry shampoo on one side of my head, and then use one on the other side of my head to see how they compare.

I think this pick did a great job of “extending” my blowout for another day. I don’t think you can use it once and then it just magically keeps your hair oil-free for days on end. You need to use it each day that you want your hair to look presentable.

Personally, I don’t use a ton of dry shampoo, as I can sometimes feel it irritating my scalp. I didn’t notice any irritation with this pick. This formula is meant to target those who typically have less oily scalps, so keep that in mind when you’re trying to decide between the two.

Amika Perk Up Ultra Oil Control Dry Shampoo

Available at Sephora ($30)

This option is for those who already typically have oily scalps or really fine hair, and they need some extra oil-absorption capabilities. This formula contains rice starch to really soak up as much oil as possible. If you typically have a really oily scalp, I would probably opt for this formula. But if you have a scalp that produces oil on a more “normal” or “average” timeline, I would probably opt for the Perk Up Plus Extended Clean Dry Shampoo.

Amika Big Hit Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner

Available at Sephora ($28 each)

I really like this duo from Amika, especially because I have heavy hair that often needs some help to get volumized. I think the shampoo does a really great job of thoroughly cleansing my scalp without drying it out. The conditioner is a good, relatively lightweight formula that adds moisture and smoothness to my hair without weighing it down. They both smell amazing,

I have no complaints about these! Are they life-changing? No, but I think that if you have some extra cash to spend on your hair care, you should consider this duo.

Amika Rising Star Volumizing Finishing Spray

Available at Sephora ($29)

This formula is meant to be sprayed onto your roots to add extra volume, and I think it really delivers. Because it’s not a dry shampoo, it’s not meant to absorb oil. You really should be using it right after you use any heat tools on your hair to add some extra oomph.

It’s also not supposed to be hairspray. It’s basically a root lift product, and I kinda hate the title of this product because I find it confusing. If you’re looking for more of a texture spray that adds texture to the ends of your hair, I would opt for the Amika Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray

Is Amika Worth It?

This haircare brand is on the pricier side. But compared to other high-end products that are around the same price, I think this brand goes above and beyond. The formulas are more than just the pretty packaging, and even though these products do contain fragrance, I didn’t notice any irritation on my sensitive scalp.

The products that have stood out to me the most are the Soulfood Nourishing Hair Mask, the Blowout Babe Thermal Ionic Hairbrush, and The Wizard Detangling Primer.
