Bikini vs Brazilian Wax: Which One Should You Choose?

Wondering the difference between a bikini vs Brazilian wax? Come hither, my lil waxing newbie. A bikini vs Brazilian wax could not be more different, in my opinion. And I’ve gotten many of each over the last 15 years, so I can easily speak to both.

There are a lot of different methods for hair removal in your pubic area. The bikini and brazilian wax are one of the more painful methods, but also one of the most long-lasting, too. Below, I cover everything you need to know about the bikini vs Brazilian wax. We’ll delve into what they are, how they work, what the differences are, and how you can give yourself a wax at home.

Bikini vs Brazilian Wax

Use this as your guide to figure out if a bikini waxing or a Brazilian wax is right for you. There are a lot of pros and cons for each method, and this blog post will help you better understand the process and the differences between the two. Read on to find out!

What Is A Bikini Wax?

A bikini wax is a hair removal treatment where warm wax is applied to unwanted hair in the bikini area and then removed. This pulls the hair out from the root. A basic bikini wax removes hair that’s visible outside your standard bikini bottom, and that’s it. It doesn’t involve removing anything else outside of that area that’s often visible when you’re in a bathing suit.

Results typically last 3-6 weeks, since hair is removed at the root rather than shaved at the surface. You can get a bikini wax at a salon or spa, and it’s usually performed by a trained esthetician or waxer. A bikini wax can be uncomfortable, especially if it’s your first time, but the pain is nothing compared to Brazilian waxing. (I would know, since I’ve gotten both done before). With regular bikini wax treatments, you’ll start to notice that the discomfort and pain lessen with each treatment. Your skin may be slightly red or sensitive for a day or two afterward, and exfoliating regularly between appointments helps prevent ingrown hairs.

How Does A Bikini Wax Work?

When you arrive for your bikini wax appointment, your esthetician will have you lie down on a treatment table. Then, they will ask you to remove your bottoms, including your undies. Remember: You don’t have to be shy or embarrassed. The practitioners do these types of waxes all day, every day, and I’m sure they have seen it all!

They’ll clean the area first, sometimes with a gel. Sometimes they will apply baby powder to the area so that the wax can adhere to your skin more easily. Then they apply a thin layer of warm wax to the skin in the direction of hair growth. A cloth or paper strip is then pressed firmly on top of the wax and quickly pulled off in the opposite direction of hair growth, taking the hair with it from the root. This process is repeated until all of the unwanted hair in the bikini line area is removed. Your esthetician will then apply a soothing oil or lotion to calm the skin and remove any wax residue. The whole appointment typically takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

What Is A Brazilian Wax?

A Brazilian wax is essentially a bikini wax’s much more intense older sister. While a bikini line wax only removes hair along the bikini line, a Brazilian wax removes all or nearly all of the hair in the pubic area—including the front, the sides, and the back. Yes, the back. Some people leave a small strip or triangle of hair in the front (sometimes called a “landing strip”). Others opt for complete removal. It’s totally up to you and your preference!

Like a bikini wax, a Brazilian wax is performed by a trained esthetician using warm wax. Results typically last anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. However, because a Brazilian covers so much more surface area (including more sensitive areas), it is significantly more uncomfortable than a basic bikini wax. That said, just like with a bikini wax, the pain does get more manageable the more regularly you get it done. Your hair also tends to grow back finer and sparser over time with consistent waxing, which is a major perk. You can expect some redness and sensitivity for a day or two after your appointment. Avoid tight clothing, hot showers, and sweaty workouts for at least 24 hours post-wax to keep irritation to a minimum.

How Does A Brazilian Wax Work?

A Brazilian wax works similarly to a bikini wax in terms of the actual process, but it covers a significantly larger area. You should expect the appointment to take a little longer and be a little more, shall I say, intimate. When you arrive, your esthetician will have you undress from the waist down and lie on the treatment table. You’ll likely be asked to move into a few different positions throughout the appointment—like holding your knees to your chest or turning onto your side—so that your esthetician can access every area. Again, don’t be shy. They do this all day long!

Just like with a bikini wax, they’ll start by cleaning the area and applying baby powder so the wax can adhere properly. Then they apply warm wax in small sections, press a cloth or paper strip on top, and pull it off quickly in the opposite direction of hair growth. For more sensitive areas, some estheticians prefer to use hard wax. This type of wax hardens on its own and doesn’t require a strip, and tends to be gentler on delicate skin. In my experience, I’ve gotten a lot more waxes with hard wax versus soft wax with a strip.

The process is repeated until every area is done, and your esthetician will finish up by using tweezers to catch any stray hairs, then apply a soothing oil or lotion to calm the skin. Wondering how long does a Brazilian wax take? The whole appointment typically takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the salon and the esthetician.

What’s The Difference Between A Bikini And A Brazilian Wax?

Now that we know what each treatment is and how they work, let’s break down the key differences between the two side by side. Because while they’re both waxing treatments in the same general area, there are quite a few things that set them apart.

Coverage area

This is the most obvious difference between the two. A bikini wax only removes hair that would be visible outside of a standard bikini bottom. This is around the inner thighs and the top of the pubic area. A Brazilian wax, on the other hand, removes everything (including the front, the sides, the back, and everything in between). Some people leave a bit of hair, but a full Brazilian removes all hair in the entire pubic region.

Pain level

Let’s be real: both of these wax treatments hurt. But a Brazilian wax is significantly more painful than a bikini wax, simply because it covers more surface area and includes much more sensitive areas. The pain is fleeting—each pull lasts just a split second—and it absolutely gets more manageable the more regularly you go. If you’re a waxing newbie, I’d recommend starting with a bikini wax. Once you get used to the sensation, you can graduate to a Brazilian.

Cost

Because a Brazilian wax is a more involved and time-consuming treatment, it’s going to cost more than a basic bikini wax. A bikini wax typically runs from $30 to $55, depending on the salon and where you live. But a Brazilian wax can range from $50 to $100 or more. In a city like New York, expect to pay on the higher end of both of those ranges. It’s also customary to tip your esthetician 15-20% on top of the service price, so factor that in when you’re budgeting.

Duration of results

Both treatments remove hair from the root, so both will give you similarly long-lasting results—typically anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks. However, because a Brazilian removes more hair from more areas, some people feel like the results look and feel cleaner for longer compared to a bikini wax, where regrowth along the bikini line can become noticeable a little sooner.

Bikini vs Brazilian Wax: Which One Should You Choose?

Appointment length

A bikini wax is a relatively quick appointment. Most take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. A Brazilian wax takes a bit longer, usually between 30 and 45 minutes, because of the additional coverage area and the extra care required in more sensitive spots. If you’re in a time crunch, a bikini wax is definitely the faster option.

How often you should get waxed

For both treatments, most estheticians recommend coming back every 4 to 6 weeks. This is because waxing is most effective when the hair is at a consistent length and growth cycle. Going too frequently can irritate the skin, while waiting too long means dealing with more discomfort during your appointment. If you stay on a regular schedule, you’ll notice over time that your hair grows back finer, sparser, and the process becomes less painful overall.

Hair length required

This is something a lot of first-timers don’t know about, and it’s important! For both a bikini wax and a Brazilian wax, your hair needs to be a certain length for the wax to be able to grip it properly. Most estheticians recommend at least a quarter inch of hair growth—roughly the size of a grain of rice—before your appointment. That’s typically about two to three weeks of growth after shaving. If your hair is too short, the wax won’t be able to grab it effectively. If it’s too long, your esthetician may need to trim it down before starting, which some salons charge extra for. Whatever you do, don’t shave right before your appointment!

Which one is right for you?

At the end of the day, deciding between a bikini wax vs a Brazilian wax really comes down to your personal preference and your pain tolerance. If you’re new to waxing, want something low-maintenance, or just want to clean up the bikini line, a bikini wax is a great place to start. If you want a more thorough, long-lasting result and you’re okay with a bit more discomfort, a Brazilian wax is absolutely worth it. Either way, finding a skilled, experienced esthetician you trust makes all the difference in the world. So don’t be afraid to ask around for recommendations before booking!

Giving yourself a wax at home

I’ve gotten many Brazilian and bikini waxes in my life, and now that I consider myself a pro, I prefer to do my own waxes at home. I have totally fallen in love with the Sliick At Home Waxing Kit over the last year, and I find it incredibly easy to give myself a bikini wax whenever I need it. It saves me a ton of money and, while it may take more time than getting a quick bikini wax at my nearest salon, I find the results worth it!
