I hope you are as pleasantly surprised by these Kitsch Shampoo Bar reviews as I was! I’m really excited to write this one out because I was not expecting to like these little bars as much as I do.
Truth be told, I haven’t used a ton of shampoo bars over the years. Mostly because I felt like they dried out my hair. Or, my hair was just too long to try and get the bar onto my scalp. Of course it’s doable, but I found that liquid shampoo was easier to disperse into my long hair, rather than a shampoo bar. Now, my hair is pretty short, and it couldn’t be easier to get a shampoo and conditioner bar into my scalp and hair.
If you don’t know much about shampoo bars, here’s a little synopsis for you: These little bars are basically a very concentrated, solid version of your traditional liquid shampoo. They contain most of the typical ingredients that you’d find in your typical shampoo, just without the water added in to make it liquidy. There are a bunch of benefits to using shampoo bars over liquid shampoo, which I will cover more in-depth in these Kitsch Shampoo Bar reviews below. For now, just know that shampoo bars have come a long way in the last ten years—they’re not like the bar soap your husband uses to wash his hair (ew!).
Kitsch Shampoo Bar Reviews: Everything You Need to Know About These Best-Sellers
Kitsch is a beauty and haircare brand founded by Cassandra Thurswell in 2010. This brand is well-known for its affordability, super cute and durable hair accessories, effective hair care products, and commitment to sustainability.
Kitsch is well-known for not only their amazing hair accessories, but also for their best-selling shampoo bars and conditioners. I truthfully had no idea what to expect with the Kitsch shampoo bar, but was pretty wow-ed after the first time I used it.
For whatever reason, I thought that it would be difficult to get the bar into my hair and lather it up, but it was pretty freakin easy. All I had to do was wet my hair, wet the bar, and then apply it to different sections of my scalp in a circular motion. The process took a little bit longer to apply to my scalp versus a traditional liquid shampoo. However, I didn’t need to go back to my shampoo bottle and then pour out more shampoo to add to another area of my scalp (which happens to me often, especially when I had long hair).
This shampoo lathered beautifully and it definitely was able to reach every nook and cranny on my scalp. The scents were lovely and I felt like it was easy to wash out, too. Read on for more in-depth Kitsch Shampoo Bar reviews (plus some conditioner bar reviews, too)!
What Are Kitsch Shampoo Bars?
As I mentioned above, Kitsch shampoo bars are shampoo ingredients in a solid, bar form. One of the biggest draws that folks have towards shampoo bars is that they are more eco-friendly. They use significantly less packaging (and don’t require plastic bottles to hold the formula in). Oftentimes, the box and any other protective packaging is made out of recyclable or biodegradable paper, which is a huge win for the environment.
Another big benefit of shampoo bars is that they can last forever, since they are not diluted with water. For example, these Kitsch shampoo bars are said to replace two shampoo bottles.
There are seven different Kitsch shampoo bars, and each of them contains different ingredients. I tested two of the bars: The Rice Water Shampoo Bar and the Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar. The Rice Water Shampoo Bar contains ingredients including rice water proteins, amino acids, and vitamins B, C, and E. It also includes vegetable glycerin, hydrogenated castor oil, and natural fragrance.
The Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar contains—you guessed it—rosemary extract, biotin, and something called NaturePep Amaranth, which helps to boost keratin production to help thicken strands from within. You can also find natural fragrance, activated charcoal, and hydrolyzed oat protein in this formula.
The Rice Water Shampoo Bar claims to repair damaged hair, prevent split ends, encourages overall hair length and density, and boosts shine, too. A lot of the reviews for this shampoo on the brand’s website claim that this shampoo bar helped grow back their hair after experiencing alopecia, Addison’s disease, hair loss and thinness due to aging, and more. I do have to say that the before and after pictures are pretty impressive!
The Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar claims to thoroughly cleanse to encourage hair growth, thicken strands, and boost volume, shine, and keratin production, too. After testing this shampoo a bunch, I did notice that it added a bit of volume to my scalp after each wash. Nothing super crazy, but also nothing that wasn’t noticeable, either.
The Best Kitsch Shampoo Bars (Or The Ones That I’ve Tried!)

This pick does a great job of cleansing my hair without making my scalp or strands feel super dry. I do notice a slight amount of volume in my hair after I use this shampoo, but nothing super crazy. I think the scent is really nice, and I feel like this one lathers really well, too.
Typically, volumizing shampoos can leave hair feeling dry, but I don’t experience that with this shampoo. That being said, I always use a conditioner after I shampoo, so I don’t know how this would make your hair feel if you were to only use shampoo and not a conditioner.
Side note: I totally love that the shampoo bars are shaped in an “S” shape to indicate shampoo. And the conditioner bars are shaped in a “C” to indicate shampoo. Makes the whole bar process a lot easier.
Kitsch Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Conditioner Bar

I think this might have been the first conditioner bar I’ve ever tried before. Wild, I know! This pick blew me out of the water and I was really impressed. I didn’t think a bar would leave my hair as hydrated as this did, but it definitely delivered. I ran this along my strands and avoided my scalp with this pick because I didn’t want the conditioner to weigh down my hair.
This does a lovely job of hydrating my strands without being too heavy. And I was easily able to comb through my hair once I got out of the shower.
Kitsch Rice Water Protein Hair Shampoo Bar

Truthfully, I haven’t used this product long enough to notice any type of excessive hair growth. But I will say that I love the formula and I also love the way it makes my hair and scalp feel, too. I like that this formula felt a little bit more hydrating than the Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar formula. It also was really easy to lather into my hair and rinse out.
Kitsch Rice Water Protein Hair Conditioner Bar

This pick felt pretty similar to the Kitsch Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Conditioner Bar. The scent was different, but I feel like the formula felt the same to me. It was lovely and certainly hydrating enough for my hair. Again, I haven’t used them long enough to notice any significant hair growth. But because this formula focuses so much on strengthening (and feels pretty gentle on my hair), I can see this contributing to hair growth when used frequently.
Do Kitsch Shampoo Bars Work?
Yes! I am so pleasantly surprised by these shampoo bars! And the conditioner bars are just as amazing. I haven’t used many shampoo or conditioner bars, so I don’t have much to compare it to. But I would absolutely recommend these to anyone who wants to invest in waterless hair care products. I love that they take up a lot less room in your shower, and I also appreciate that they are sustainable and eco-friendly. The fact that they are basically two bottles of shampoo in one bar is amazing as well.
I’m even considering purchasing the Kitsch Shampoo + Conditioner 4pc Sampler Set because I know this size would be perfect for traveling. And I love that you don’t have to worry about them being TSA-approved because they are solids.
I think your best bet would be to choose a Kitsch shampoo bar that targets whichever hair concern you have. So if you want more volume, try the Kitsch Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar and Conditioner Bar. If you’re in need of a dandruff shampoo, try the Kitsch Anti-Dandruff Clarifying Shampoo + Conditioner Combo. There are formulas for multiple hair concerns and needs.
How To Use Kitsch Shampoo Bar
According to the brand, there are two ways you can apply the shampoo bar—palm lathering or direct scalp application. You want to make sure that your hair is fully drenched before using either method.
Method 1: Palm lathering
Run the shampoo bar between your hands about 5-6 times. Make sure you run it enough to get a creamy lather in your hands. Then, set the shampoo bar down and apply the lather directly through your scalp in sections. Make sure to use your fingertips to massage the shampoo formala into your scalp. Depending on if you ahve thick or long hair, you might need to run the shampoo bar between your hands a couple of times to get enough lather for your whole head.
Once that’s done, rinse your scalp and hair thoroughly—you’ll want to rinse your hair longer than you would with liquid shampoo. The brand recommends at least 60 seconds of active rinsing.
Method 2: Direct scalp application
This is my perferred method when using my Kitsch shampoo bars. I like to throughly wet my hair with water, then apply the bar directly to different sections of my scalp. After that, you can put the bar down and massage the formula into your scalp more thoroughly. You can rinse it out the same way as above, with at least 60 seconds of active rinsing to make sure you get all the suds out.

Whether shampoo bars are better than liquid shampoo is going to depend on your hair type and what you’re prioritizing. For people with normal to oily hair, shampoo bars can definitely perform just as well as a liquid shampoo. Plus, they come with a lot of added perks, like being more eco-friendly, travel-friendly, cost-effective, and free from harsh sulfates. A good shampoo bar, like Kitsch, is formulated with nourishing ingredients that cleanse without stripping, and one bar typically lasts the equivalent of two to three liquid bottles.
That said, liquid shampoo may still be the better option for people with very dry, curly, or coarse hair that needs extra moisture, or for anyone dealing with hard water, which can interact with shampoo bar ingredients and leave residue. The other thing worth knowing is that shampoo bars can come with an adjustment period. I’ve only tried two of the Kitsch shampoo bars. I think it really depends on your hair needs, but I honestly really liked both that I tried! If you are wanting more hair growth, I would go with the Kitsch Rice Water Shampoo Bar. If you want more volume, try the Kitsch Rosemary and Biotin Volumizing Shampoo Bar.
Are Kitsch shampoo bars non-toxic?
