My Honest Shark Flex Style Reviews

If you’ve considered investing in a spendy hair tool recently, these Shark Flex Style reviews will not disappoint. I’m excited to write these Shark Flex Style reviews because this product is a serious competitor to the Dyson Airwrap. And I would know, because I now have both.

Ever since I chopped off all my hair a few months ago, I’ve been styling my hair after showering a lot more often. I think my new cut just looks better when I use a hair tool to style it, rather than letting my hair air dry.

If you’re someone who styles your hair often with a hot tool, you need to invest in a tool that won’t fry your hair off. In these Shark Flex Style reviews, I’ll be sharing my honest thoughts about this best-selling tool and help you decide if it’s worth shelling out your cash for.

My Honest Shark Flex Style Reviews

In this review, I’ll be covering everything you need to know about the Shark Flex Style. I’ll cover what I like about the product, what I don’t like, how I think it compares to the Dyson Airwrap, and much more. Read on to find out more about this nifty device.

What Is The Shark Flex Style?

I first learned about the Shark Flex Style while on a press trip with the brand years ago. They were introducing us to the new device and let us test it out while we were on the trip. I do remember thinking to myself, “wow, this is a competitive dupe for the Dyson Airwrap.” And while yes, it’s incredibly similar to the Airwrap, it also has some key features that I actually prefer over the Airwrap.

Because this device is about $300 less than the Dyson Airwrap, I thought it probably wouldn’t work as well. But I was definitely wrong. I think what makes this device unique is that it’s relatively affordable but well-made and sturdy. Plus, it has some features that the Airwrap does not.

For example, one of the things I love about the Flex Style is that you can twist the device into a traditional hairdryer. This is something that’s not available with the Dyson Airwrap, which can only really be used as a styling tool, rather than a blow dryer. You can use the Shark Flex Style to both dry and style. While yes, you can use the Airwrap to rough dry your hair, I’ve noticed that the strength of the air isn’t as strong in the Airwrap as it is in the Flex Style. You’d have to purchase the Dyson Supersonic Blowdryer to really get a good blow-drying tool (see my Dyson Airwrap vs Supersonic blog post for a comparison between the two).

In my below review of the various Shark FlexStyle attachments, I will be comparing a lot of them to the Dyson Airwrap. Sorry in advance if that is annoying. But I seem to be comparing it a lot to the Airwrap whenever I use it. I think it’s just nice to know how it compares to the Airwrap and whether it’s worth the $300 price tag.

Another thing to note is that, depending on your hair type, your results might be different from mine. If you are someone who has really thick, coarse, curly hair, you might not find this styling tool as effective as, say, your flat iron or curling iron. Depending on the attachments that you choose, you can also use the curling defining diffuser if you have curly or textured hair. I have pretty straight, slightly wavy strands, so I don’t need a diffuser.

My Thoughts on the Shark FlexStyle Attachments

Shark FlexStyle Round Brush Attachment

This is probably my favorite attachment of the bunch. I asked the brand to send me this round brush attachment separately. I’m pretty sure it is sold separately, which is annoying. I think there is a pretty big difference in the appearance of my hair when I use the round brush attachment vs. the oval brush attachment.

My hair is a bit more bouncy when I use the round brush. And I just like the way my hair looks more with the round brush attachment. I find it easier to run through my short hair. And I really love the smoothing boar and nylon bristles that are long and grab hold of my hair really well.

I saw some bad reviews of this attachment on Ulta. I have no idea what those people are talking about. This brush attachment doesn’t ever fall off or get unattached from the base. I have no issues gliding it through my hair. Maybe other hair types don’t do well with it? IDK, but I personally love it.

Shark FlexStyle Paddle Brush

I love this paddle brush, and probably more so than the one that comes with the Airwrap. This one has really long and strong bristles on it, which makes it easier to grip onto my hair. I like to use this paddle brush in the back of my hair, and then I will use the round brush attachment for the front pieces along the crown of my head. It makes the process hella easy to just run the paddle brush in the back of my hair and then do a bit of extra work in the front with the round brush.

Shark FlexStyle 1.25″ Auto-Wrap Curlers

When I had really long hair, these auto-wrap curlers made my hair look great. They work the exact same as the Airwrap curlers. Except you have to swap them out whenever you want to switch the way your hair is curled. When you use the curlers, you should finish each curl with the cool shot button. This helps to really lock in the curl pattern so that they last longer.

When I used these on my long hair, they made my hair look like I had a beautiful, bouncy blowout. When I use them on my now short hair, they make me look like a freak lol. I used them on my short hair before going out to dinner with my husband a few weeks ago. He said that my hair looked good, but I knew he was just lying to make me feel better haha. My hair looked a little crazy and too poofy and triangular.

Some women love to use the curlers on their short hair. They like the look of the curls, but I do not. I prefer to use a curling iron on my short hair. Therefore, I don’t use these curlers when my hair is short, unfortunately. Maybe if I used less heat while using them then they wouldn’t be so curly and crazy-looking. But I haven’t tried that yet.

Shark FlexStyle Oval Brush Attachment

Some folks love the oval round brush on their hair. On long hair, it can create a smooth blowout that doesn’t have a ton of volume. It still has volume, but not as much as it would be if you used a round brush. On short hair, the oval round brush made my hair look too poofy. I prefer the round brush on short hair because the oval brush makes my short locks look like I have helmet hair.

Shark FlexStyle Styling Concentrator

This is just your average styling concentrator that you can use to blowout your hair with a separate brush, if you choose. I don’t think there is anything special about this attachment. But, I do I think it’s nice to have if you want to twist your Shark FlexStyle into the blowdry feature and use this attachment for a smoother, sleeker, and less messy blowdry.

Shark FlexStyle Wide-Tooth Comb

Truth be told, I haven’t tried this one yet. But, I did ask the brand to send it to me for this review. The Wide Tooth Comb attachment on my Dyson Supersonic is one of my go-tos. I use it a lot when I want my hair to be straight, but not so straight that it looks like I took a straightening iron to it. I haven’t tried this one yet but I’m hoping to get similar results. Stay tuned!

Is Shark FlexStyle Worth It?

Is the Shark FlexStyle worth $300? Personally, I think so. Compared to other hair tool products that I’ve tested over the 10+ years I’ve been working as a beauty editor/writer, $300 isn’t a ton of money to spend on a tool that offers four different types of hair styles. For example, one of the top-selling luxury blowdryers that’s sold on Amazon right now is the T3 AireLuxe  Digital Ionic Professional Blow Hair Dryer, which retails for $209. And that’s only for one type of device (a traditional blowdryer).

With the Shark FlexStyle, you get four types of hair tool devices in one. You get a traditional blow dryer, a curler, a smoothing dryer attachment, and an oval brush attachment to give you an easier blowout. Obviously, $300 is a lot to spend on a hair tool. But it’s not a ton pricier than other high-end hair tools on the market (that only serve one purpose).

For this cutie blowout, I used the Round Brush Attachment for the front of my face, and then used the Paddle Brush Attachment for the back! Using both made it simple and fast as could be.

It’s half the price of the Dyson. And to be honest, I think it stands up to the Airwrap in terms of how well-made it is and the functionality of it. It’s hard for me to say if it “protects the hair” as well as the Airwrap does in terms of hair damage. I do appreciate that both of the devices are effective in minimizing heat damage overall.

When going through some of the bad reviews of this device on Ulta, I noticed that a handful of people mentioned that the device died out on them after a few months to a year. I haven’t used it long enough for it to die out on me. But maybe that’s something to consider before purchasing. I believe that it has a 2-year warranty in case something happens.

Also, I can’t write these Shark Flex Style reviews without mentioning one of my unexpectedly favorite part about this device—the storage bag. The brand sent me the Limited Edition Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System Black Cherry. It comes with this neoprene storage bag that fits everything into it perfectly.

The bag makes the whole process of using this device so much easier for me. For example, my Dyson Airwrap came in a large, clunky “presentation case” that is a pain in the ass to get in and out of my closet when I need to use it. The neoprene storage bag that came with my FlexStyle has made it way easier for me to grab it when I need it. And it also makes it easier to just throw the tool and all of the attachments into the bag whenever I’m done with it.

I also love it because you can just throw the whole thing in your suitcase if you want to bring your FlexStyle along with you on vacation or traveling. You definitely can’t do that with the “presentation case” that the Airwrap comes in. Plus, I usually have to just pack my Airwrap without protection in my suitcase, which is annoying.

So yeah, the neoprene storage bag seems like it’s not a big deal, but I’ve weirdly found it to be a game-changer for me in terms of how often I use my hot tool device. I don’t think that the bag comes with other FlexStyle bundles. But, you can purchase it separately here if you’d like! If you don’t want to spend $47 on the bag, I’d suggest purchasing another case from Amazon like the Leudes Hair Tools Travel Bag.

How To Use The SharkFlex Style

Use the correct attachment for the specific look you’re going for

I know this is a no-brainer, but it’s important to use the correct attachment to achieve whichever hairstyle you’re going for. Here’s a super brief list of what each attachment will do to your hair:

  • Curler attachments – These will create bouncy, voluminous curls
  • Round brush attachment – This will help create a bouncier blowout look
  • Oval brush attachment – This will help create a smoother, sleeker blowout look
  • Paddle brush attachment – This will help create a sleek, straight blowout look without a ton of volume
  • Concentrator nozzle attachment – This will help rough-dry your hair
  • Wide-tooth comb attachment – This will create a more sleek, straight look without much volume

Use on damp hair

It’s best to use the Shark Flexstyle on damp hair that’s about 80% dried. If your hair is too wet while trying to use the curlers or the smoothing attachments, the curls won’t hold and your hair won’t be as smooth.

Spritz in a heat protectant

You should always use a heat protectant in your hair before using heat on it. My latest favorite is the Amika The Wizard Detangling Primer.

Adjust the settings based on your hair type

If you have fine hair, it’s best to use low or medium heat and airflow to prevent frizz and to prevent frying your fine hair. If you have thick or coarse hair, use the higher heat and airflow buttons.

Section your hair

I always like to section my hair off when I’m using the Shark FlexStyle because it just makes it a lot easier to control where I’m applying heat. It makes the whole process less messy. I’ve been using the Mane All Grip No Slip Alligator Hair Clips.

For this blowout, I used the Oval Brush Attachment, which created a bit of a smoother, less voluminous blowout
